A mutilated corpse turns up in a snowbound marina in Falkenberg, Sweden. It belongs to Linnea Blix, a gifted young jewelry designer. Meanwhile, on Hampstead Heath in London, police find a small boy whose injuries resemble hers. The story then moves back to Buchenwald in 1944, where Erich Hebner, caught in the horrors of the Holocaust, is desperate to reclaim his sense of being human.

Are these killings the work of one serial murderer, and what ties them to the disturbing events inside Buchenwald? Emily Roy, a profiler lent to Scotland Yard by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, teams up with Linnea's friend Alexis Castells, a French true-crime writer, to look into the baffling case.

Their search takes them from Sweden to London and then far back into the past, where a shocking and frightening link begins to emerge.
