Cesar's Way
About This Book
Cesar Millan built his reputation on reading dogs rather than drilling them. Known to American audiences through his television series, his celebrity clientele and a visit to The Oprah Winfrey Show, he does not describe himself as a trainer in the usual sense. His skill is in understanding how a dog thinks, and this book sets out to teach that understanding to ordinary owners. Millan also tells his own story, which begins on a clay-walled farm in Mexico and ends up among the wealthy neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Along the way he explains how he came to grasp what motivates dogs, and he uses that background to explain why he approaches behavior the way he does. His method comes down to three things, given in this order: exercise, discipline, and affection. He walks through the basics of canine psychology and pack instinct, then draws on some of his most memorable cases to show how common problems take hold and how they can be fixed. Along the way he argues that what a dog needs is often different from what its owner provides, that discipline is not the same as punishment, and that there are no problem breeds, only problem owners. The book also offers guidance on choosing a dog that suits you and your family, and on communicating with your dog in terms it understands. Stories about Millan's longtime clients run throughout, and the volume opens with forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and by Jada Pinkett Smith.
