About this book
Ebbie Catherine Sullivan is a precocious and inquisitive twelve-year old girl growing up during The Great Depression with her little hound dog Blue in the southern Alabama town of Charity Junction. Her mother is a mail order bride and her father is a shoemaker from up north. Ebbie Catherine believes she can change the world with her pen. She writes letters to the world from either her front porch swing or her feather bed. At first glance, it seems she writes about her life in Charity Junction with her family and her adventures with Blue. However, she is greatly disturbed by many of the social injustices she sees around her and in the world itself. She writes about The Great Depression, poverty, racism, the Holocaust and the Jews and back door abortions as well as the KKK and subsequent killing of the slaves and the colored people. This is the first book in a series that follows the character throughout her lifetime. The first book in the series ends when she is sixteen.
