Chesapeake
About This Book
Chesapeake follows the Eastern Shore of Maryland across four centuries, beginning with the Native peoples who lived along the bay and running up to the present day. James A. Michener tells it as a multigenerational epic, letting one stretch of coastline carry the story of a young country growing up. The story opens in the early 1600s with Edmund Steed, a young Englishman who wants out of a country where his faith puts him in danger. He crosses the Atlantic on a punishing voyage with Captain John Smith and settles in the New World. There he builds a life and founds a family line whose fortunes rise and fall alongside those of America itself. Around the Steeds, Michener gathers a wide cast: Quakers, pirates, planters, enslaved people, abolitionists and disreputable politicians. Each group comes at the land and its promises from a different side, yet all of them are chasing some version of freedom. Family history and national history keep running together, so that private ambition and public events shape one another from one generation to the next. Readers who like sweeping, research-rich historical sagas that follow a single place through time will find plenty to settle into here.
