Chlorine
About This Book
This debut novel mixes a literary coming-of-age story with dark, unsettling horror. It is narrated from an adult vantage point, looking back on adolescence in a society that presses hard on young women and their bodies. Its themes include immigration, sapphic longing, and a defiant drive to remake oneself. Ren Yu's world is the swimming pool, which shapes every part of her days. Her teammates are the only people she counts as friends, and her coach is the figure she looks to for direction and hope. Ren has a clear plan: swim well enough to get noticed by scouts, earn a scholarship, attend a strong school, win her parents' affection, and keep her coach's goodwill, all leading to a secure future. Yet she sees those ambitions as the worries of people bound to land, who walk on legs. Ren was raised on stories of creatures from deep water, from oceans and rivers alike. Some lured sailors to their deaths, dragged them under, and fed on their flesh. Among these beings is the one she has always longed to become: the mermaid. She aches to be in the water and dreams of the smell of chlorine and how it feels against her skin. Ren is determined to carve out a life in which she can be free. She will go to any lengths to get there, whatever the pain, whatever others think, and however much blood it costs her.
