Jon-Tom, a spellsinger now past his prime and carrying more weight than he once did, misses the danger of his younger years. He and his former thief-turned-companion, the otter Mudge, have grown comfortable in a quiet domestic routine, and both are restless for one more real quest. With no obvious villain left to defeat, they try something unexpected and go wherever the music leads.

A cloud of drifting, lost musical notes has begun to hover around Jon-Tom. Following it leads the pair to a menace that frightens even the seasoned spellsinger: someone is draining the sound from the world's instruments. To learn who is behind the silence, and why, they must face a self-centered elephant, a grasping black bear, and a whirlpool with a crude sense of humor.

Their search for excitement has landed them in a tangle that could prove to be the last of their adventures.
