Closing The Ring
About This Book
Closing the Ring is the fifth of the six volumes in Winston Churchill's history of the Second World War. Here the Allies move from defence to attack. Mussolini falls from power, Hitler finds himself under pressure on three sides, and the Japanese struggle to hold the territories they had so recently seized. A large part of the book deals with the alliance itself. Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt were uneasy partners, and Churchill describes the detailed negotiations needed to keep them working toward a single aim. The series as a whole is told by the British prime minister who led his country against tyranny, and it draws on a wealth of primary sources. Alongside Churchill's reflections after the fact, readers find memos, letters, orders, speeches and telegrams, along with day-by-day accounts of how people reacted as events grew more tense. Across the six volumes, strategies and counterstrategies take shape in answer to Hitler's conquest of Europe, his planned invasion of England and his attack on Russia, and the book shows the decisions that mattered while the outcome of the war was still undecided. Churchill was a Nobel Prize winner, and this volume carries forward his account of the conflict from the Allied side.
