About this book
This book shows intermediate Java developers how to design and build Spring applications for cloud environments. Rather than covering isolated techniques, it follows one complete cloud native system from the first idea through to production and deployment, pointing out the design patterns, established practices, and lesser-documented shortcuts that make development smoother along the way.
The early chapters cover the fundamentals and the main patterns and technologies behind cloud native work. The development section then turns to practice: externalizing configuration, managing data in the cloud, packaging Spring Boot services into containers with Cloud Native Buildpacks, and learning the Kubernetes concepts needed to run them. Along the way you build and test applications with Spring Boot and Spring Cloud, and you see how the same approaches apply to microservices, serverless functions, and other modern architectures.
The final part addresses distributed systems. It explains how to handle security, resilience, and scalability in both imperative and reactive applications, and it covers API gateways, circuit breakers, event-driven applications and functions, authentication for single-page apps, and authorization with auditing. Configuration, observability on Kubernetes, continuous delivery, and GitOps round out the coverage of the software lifecycle.
The book is organized into three parts and twelve chapters. The author, Thomas Vitale, is a software engineer, open source contributor, and speaker at international conferences.
