Cloud Six
About This Book
Mam and Bunko are a married couple who die in a plane crash and wake up in Cloud Six, the newest and lowest tier of heaven. The place is managed by Widdershins, a slumlord demon who appears as an underwear model. With a rabbit skeleton as their guide, the two try to stay hopeful and stay together as they wander a strange afterlife, look for help, and hope to catch even a glimpse of the teenage daughter they left behind. Widdershins has troubles of his own. He is busy with workplace politics and trying to impress an ex-lover. Meanwhile Amy, who appears in the book as both guide and scribe, struggles with the question of how to tell an honest story while Satan breathes down her neck. The novel is both funny and moving, full of laughter and dread, fear and acceptance, and family ties that death cannot cut. Amy Fusselman uses the afterlife to take a sharp but humorous look at the pressures of modern life, among them parenting, substance abuse, depression, gun violence, and climate change.
