About this book
Kale Jackson has no diploma and no clear direction, and he has never managed to rein in his ability to slip through time. Some days he wakes in 1945 as a sharpshooter on the front lines, where he can do nothing as the men beside him are killed. Other days he is home, where the war has followed him as post-traumatic stress. It wears on his bond with his father and on the handful of friends who have stuck by him, and each day it gets harder to conceal the scars he carries, visible and invisible, from the battlefield.
When Harper, the girl who once lived next door, returns to town, Kale starts imagining the life he could have if he were ordinary. She is a reminder of who he was before the trauma, and being around her keeps him grounded in the present. With enough practice, he hopes he might stay in the present for good and never be pulled back to a battlefield. A normal life seems within reach.
Then Harper comes across Kale's name in a historical article that lists him among the war's casualties. Kale realizes he has to master his time-traveling ability if he wants to protect himself and any future with Harper. Otherwise, he faces death in an era where he does not belong, struck by a bullet that was never intended for him.
