Contested Europe
About This Book
Policies almost always carry costs as well as benefits, and they often produce consequences nobody planned for. The EU's eastward enlargement, beginning in 2004 and continuing afterward, is a clear example. About fifteen years later, dissatisfaction is evident both among officials in Brussels and in the countries that joined. The book examines the reasons behind this discontent from an unusual angle. Its author, György Schöpflin, spent almost thirty years as an academic at the London School of Economics before serving around fifteen years as a Member of the European Parliament. Academics rarely get to see political theory tested against real events or to observe the day-to-day practice of politics up close. The book draws on both of these vantage points, and it is aimed at readers who want to understand how political theory works in practice.
