Crossing Borders
About This Book
John W. Garver looks back on a personal journey that began with 1960s activism in Students for a Democratic Society, when he backed socialist revolution, and ended with a commitment to America that sought to explain China's pursuit of prosperity and power. He first encountered authoritarian rule in the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Burma, and China, where he saw both Taiwan and the mainland. These experiences changed how he judged America's strategy of containing communist states around the world. The bulk of the book follows his thirty-year career at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. He started out as a radical organizer whose activities drew FBI surveillance and grew into one of the foremost scholars of China's foreign policy. His academic work covers China's relations with the Soviet Union and Russia, with India, and with Iran.
