Dauntless Dames
About This Book
Ten women who starred in newspaper comic strips are the focus of this collection, which traces their work across roughly three decades. In the 1920s they appeared as socialites and flappers, and by the 1960s they had become housewives and romantic leads. Between the late 1930s and the early 1950s, however, the heroines of the funny pages took on far riskier roles: they chased criminals, ran spy missions, fought as mercenaries, and even wore capes. They matched the feats of the male strip heroes of their day, only in pumps and long skirts. The strips gave Sunday readers a break from the hardships of the Depression and carried them to distant countries and into the glittering, gangster-tinged world of show business. Many also backed the Allied cause during World War II. The women in these pages were both products of their time and ahead of it. The collection presents their adventures as fast-moving stories, and most of them appear in print again for the first time in about seventy-five years. Printed in an oversized format and illustrated throughout in full color, the book also includes a separate insert with a dozen paper doll cutouts of the most popular female strip characters of the period. Some of the women will be familiar to comics fans, while others will be new to them.
