Days & Chances
About This Book
Joanna Klink's sixth collection of poems looks at ordinary days and asks what a life is worth. How do we weigh time, luck and love? The poems are set in Texas, a place of punishing heat, ice storms and flash floods, and against that landscape Klink tries to make sense of several losses and changes at once: the disappearance of natural places, her father's failing sight, and the arrival of love in midlife. The book is built around what Virginia Woolf called "moments of being," those flashes of heightened awareness when we feel how closely we are tied to the world around us. Klink's poems move back and forth between personal time and ecological time. They deepen the sense of connection even as the landscapes and relationships around the speaker grow harder to recognize. The result is a dreamlike, searching collection that finds depth in everyday moments and offers a reminder that each day holds a chance to live more fully.
