About this book
Willow Stone finds the words Clifford Island written on the floor of her late son's bedroom. She has never heard of it, but she learns that it is a tiny island off Wisconsin's Door County peninsula, about 200 miles from her home. Determined to find out why her son wrote it and to learn the truth about his death, she travels to the island.
Willow soon realizes that something is very wrong with the place. Everyone on Clifford seems to be living in one particular day in 1994. They wear outdated clothes, avoid modern technology, and, most puzzling of all, gather every evening to watch the OJ Simpson car chase. Her questions are met with evasion, but she picks up one piece of advice: close your curtains at night.
Lily Becker, a high schooler, has lived on Clifford all her life. She is tired of the island's twisted mythology and its many rules. Having visited the mainland, where people seem normal, she is set on proving that the islanders' beliefs are a sham, though it is not clear that they are.
Five weeks after arriving, Willow disappears. Her brother, Harper, comes to the island to look for her and discovers that Clifford is far more sinister than anyone imagined. He is determined to expose it, if he can get away alive.
