About this book
Historians have long overlooked the more than 20,000 American Indians who fought in the Civil War. Sally M. Walker, a Sibert Award winner, turns to one overlooked group: the Anishinaabe sharpshooters of Michigan. Despite broken treaties, the loss of tribal land, and racism, these soldiers fought bravely and with distinction.
The book focuses on Company K, an elite unit of sharpshooters, and on Daniel Mwakewenah, a chief who took down more than 32 rebel soldiers in one battle even though he was badly wounded. Firsthand accounts from the front lines bring their experiences to life.
Photographs from the archives, maps, and diagrams accompany the text. Walker researched the subject extensively and worked with the Repatriation Department for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, the Eyaawing Museum and Cultural Center, and the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways.
