Demand the Impossible
About This Book
Robert L. Tsai follows the career of Stephen Bright, a lawyer who led the Southern Center for Human Rights for nearly forty years. The nonprofit provided legal aid to people facing death sentences. Bright argued four capital cases before the US Supreme Court and won all of them. The book is organized around those four cases and uses them to explore the legal ideas at the heart of the fight for equal justice during the early decades of mass incarceration. Each victory revealed how the law itself had been distorted by the country's appetite for harsh punishment. The cases exposed prosecutorial misconduct, persistent racial inequality, and the poor quality of legal representation provided to people who cannot afford a lawyer. Tsai presents this as a work of legal scholarship that shows how seemingly small victories can have outsized effects, and how much one exceptional lawyer did to advance equal rights.
