About this book
Deviant Hollers: Queering Appalachian Ecologies for a Sustainable Future looks at environmental destruction in Appalachia through the lens of queer ecologies. It draws on critical queer perspectives on how the United States has exploited the land, and uses them to map out alternative futures.
This collection of essays includes contributions from Lis Regula, Jessica Cory, Chet Pancake, Tijah Bumgarner, MJ Eckhouse and other thinkers. Their work brings together marginalized perspectives, both newly emerging and long established, that strengthen the struggle for a sustainable future.
The book contributes to Appalachian studies, rural queer studies, Indigenous studies and ethnographic studies of the United States. It also objects to the status quo of academic work, and to the American exceptionalism and white supremacy that run through US politics and the wider geopolitical climate. By centering queer critiques and recognizing Appalachia as a settler colony, it points toward a reimagined way of life.
