About this book
Nancy shares a stage with her cousin Diane D, performing alongside her as one of her back-up singers and dancers. One night, inside the family home in Northern Westchester, New York, Nancy meets Diane in the dark hallway outside the bedrooms, and something about her is wrong. Diane's face looks unfamiliar, and her words and manner unsettle Nancy so deeply that she runs to wake the rest of the household.
The next morning, Diane has no memory of the hallway or of what she said there. Days later, two doctors place her under hypnosis in a large hospital room, where she lies on a psychiatrist's couch, bound with chains and cuffs. Her family waits in a corner of the room as the doctors try to bring another personality to the surface. Nancy, unable to face that presence again, leaves the room early.
The story follows the family as they hear the other personality answer questions, refer to itself in the third person, and speak in a voice that seems to belong to someone else. Set against a close family home and a clinical room, the novel is a suspenseful look at identity, fear and the unsettling distance between a person and the self they cannot remember.
