Djinns
About This Book
Hüseyin spent thirty years working in Germany. With his savings he buys a bright, roomy flat in Istanbul, expecting to enjoy retirement in his home country alongside his wife, Emine. On the day he moves in, he dies of a heart attack. As his wife and children travel to Turkey for the funeral, the novel turns to each of their lives and longings. One son is a teenager struggling to accept his sexuality. A daughter with a university education is trying to reconcile the conflicting parts of her identity. The eldest son has been racialized and profiled all his life and made to play a role he never chose. Another daughter was left behind in rural Turkey and joined the family in Germany as a teenager, and she still hopes to win back their love. Their mother cannot escape the cycles of violence that have shaped her life. Fatma Aydemir's characters are very different from one another but share a deep wish to be understood. The novel does not unfold as a smooth, linear story. It circles around suppressed memories, unspoken trauma, and buried pasts. By upending common expectations and stereotypes of the immigrant experience, Aydemir shows how people wrestle with power and beauty, with the gaps in their lives, and with the demons just out of view.
