Documenting Displacement
About This Book
Forced migration and exile are hard to study when displaced people live with legal precarity, constant movement and the criminalization of migrants. Conventional research methods can hide the agency of displaced people and overlook the power gaps between researchers and the people they study. Documenting Displacement looks critically at how knowledge is co-created and reproduced through narratives in spaces of displacement, using a creative, collective and interdisciplinary approach. The book examines the ethics and methods of research across a range of forced migration settings and suggests new ways to think about and record displacement. Each chapter takes up particular ethical and methodological problems, paying special attention to unequal power in co-creating knowledge, questions of representation and ownership, and how to adapt methods to situations of mobility. The contributors speak frankly about what succeeded and what did not, giving established and emerging researchers material for discussion. The book is notable for its use of arts-based methods. It encourages researchers to go beyond the procedural ethics required by academic institutions and adopt a relational ethics that takes fuller account of the researcher's own position and the interests of displaced people.
