About this book
Four years ago, an attack on the van Aust family's Los Angeles home killed both parents and left their daughter, Melia, alive. The murders drew wide attention across the city, partly because they seemed senseless: nothing was taken, and the family appeared to have no enemies. The case was never solved. Melia left Los Angeles soon afterward, and her brother Jasper has not been seen since.
Rainey Hall knows what it means to grow up in a troubled household. She spent her childhood overshadowed by famous parents, and a family tragedy six years earlier split her own family apart. That history led her to open a private investigation agency devoted to helping victims of crimes that might otherwise go unsolved.
When Melia returns to Los Angeles and moves back into the family home, she starts receiving messages that grow more violent and refer to her parents' deaths. She hires Rainey to identify the sender and find her missing brother. Rainey, struck by the parallels between their lives, feels driven to keep Melia safe, and their connection grows beyond the professional.
The search pulls Rainey into Melia's world, where disgraced royals, nosy neighbors, volatile ex-boyfriends and former staff each have secrets of their own. As the threats escalate and the two women draw closer, another victim turns up, and time starts to run out.
