Duppy Conqueror
About This Book
Robert Beckford revisits and reshapes Black and Womanist theologies of liberation, which were developed mainly in African American contexts. Here the starting point is the Black British experience, and the book reframes those traditions from that vantage point. Beckford works in two directions. The first is a contextual Black theology that links terms from Black cultural history and urban life, namely Rahtid, Dread, and Dub, to the theological ideas of God, Jesus, and the Spirit. The second is what he calls media theopraxis, which applies Black theology to commercial television documentaries and to studio-produced contemporary gospel music. The book is part of the My Theology series, in which leading Christian thinkers set out the central tenets of their beliefs in short, compact volumes.
