Elijah's Easter Suit

Elijah's Easter Suit is a picture book about a young boy who sets out to find the perfect outfit to wear to church on Easter. His search is guided by the elders in his community and reflects the style and humor of the story.

When his attempts at the stores in his town fail and leave him disappointed, Elijah talks with Deacon Brown and Mother Green about tradition, culture and clothing. Their conversation gives him the courage to make his own Easter outfit, a patchwork that tells his story with flair.

Along the way Elijah learns why Easter traditions matter to his family, his ancestors and the Black church. Church and Black culture run through the whole of his quest, which follows a boy coming to understand the people who came before him.

An afterword from the author looks at the traditions and culture of Black communities at Easter, and at the historical importance of Easter clothing and style.
