About This Book
In September 1913, a young Pole with tuberculosis checks into a guesthouse in Görbersdorf, a spa village in the Silesian mountains where patients go to recover. The house is run by Wilhelm Opitz and takes only men. Each evening its residents gather to drink a local liqueur with hallucinogenic effects and to argue over the questions of their time: whether monarchy or democracy is better, whether devils exist, whether women are born inferior, and whether the nation should choose war or peace. Strange events soon unfold inside the house and in the hills around it. Someone, or something, seems to be watching the place and trying to slip into this closed society. The newcomer struggles to understand his own inner life and the sinister forces at work beyond the walls, but he may not yet realize that the watcher has already set its sights on someone new. Olga Tokarczuk returns to the ground Thomas Mann covered in The Magic Mountain, a century after that novel appeared, and makes it her own. The book was originally written in Polish and appears in English as The Empusium.
