About this book
Encounters with Infinity is a collection of three plays about pioneering physicists from the Indian subcontinent and the people around them. The works are set against the great events of the twentieth century: two world wars, the Indian freedom struggle and, above all, the arrival of relativity and quantum mechanics. The characters are men and women whose work changed how we understand a vast and mysterious universe.
The Square Root of a Sonnet looks at the history and science of black holes through the complicated bond between two giants of astrophysics, the Indian-American physicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and his mentor, Sir Arthur Eddington.
The Trial of Abdus Salam is a courtroom drama about the life of Abdus Salam, the first Muslim to win the Nobel Prize in Physics, in 1979, for his work on unifying the fundamental forces of nature. Today he lies in a desecrated grave, shunned by his own country.
Invisible Particles reimagines the largely erased story of Bibha Chowdhuri, India's first woman physicist. It follows her as she fights entrenched patriarchy, social prejudice and colonial injustice while joining the international search for an elusive elementary particle, the meson.
