Endless Flight
About This Book
Joseph Roth wrote novels and newspaper journalism, and he recorded the events of his age with close attention. Born and raised in Galicia, at the far eastern edge of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he often reshaped his own history in the telling. Keiron Pim's biography follows a life that seemed to mirror the unravelling of Europe. In his final years of wandering, Roth was exiled from Germany, his wife was confined to an asylum, and he died as an alcoholic on the eve of the Second World War. Pim traces the restlessness and longing for belonging that shaped Roth, from his childhood in the town of Brody through his years in Vienna and his unsettled travels across the continent. The book examines the role of Roth's absent father in the stories he imagined, and how Roth related to his Jewishness. The biography also speaks to the present. Readers are increasingly rediscovering Roth's work, and his trajectory, shaped by uncertainty, fear, refugee crises and rising ethno-nationalism, is presented as especially relevant to our own time. Roth is the author of The Radetzky March.
