Jevlen's society is coming apart, and the trouble seems to trace back to JEVEX, the vast computer that runs every part of Jevlenese life. Shutting the machine down does not end the disorder. Individuals begin to shift in strange ways, as though some outside force has taken hold of them. Far away, in a reality governed by sorcery where nothing physical can be relied upon, devout figures catch sight of a different world. In that world objects keep their form when they move, and every cause produces a clear, logical effect. Certain people, if their hearts are pure, their minds steady, and conditions right, may cross over into it. The question is whether that crossing can ever be opened to everyone.
