Envy

Thomas "Veck" DelVecchio, Jr. is a homicide detective who has never been able to outrun his family name. His father was a serial killer, and Veck grew up beside that darkness. Now he works the job as a kind of penance, balanced between doing right by the law and giving in to a hunger for revenge, all while he wrestles with the violence he fears he carries inside him.

Watching his every move is Sophia Reilly, an Internal Affairs officer assigned to keep tabs on him. Her interest is supposed to be strictly professional, but it isn't, and the pull between the two of them complicates a case that already has little room for error.

A third figure connects them: Jim Heron, a stranger who seems to know far too much about matters that can get people killed. As Veck and Sophia are pulled into a larger war between good and evil, Jim, a fallen angel, may be the only thing keeping them from losing their souls for good.

Envy is part of J.R. Ward's Fallen Angels series, written by the author of the Black Dagger Brotherhood books. It blends a dark police story with a paranormal struggle and a romance at its center.
