About this book
Erin's Diary is set in Derry, Northern Ireland, during the 1990s, the world of the television comedy Derry Girls. Its narrator, Erin, is sixteen and coming of age while The Troubles shape daily life. Armed police patrol in armoured Land Rovers, British Army checkpoints are a common sight, and the decade's pop culture, including Murder She Wrote, The Cranberries, Salt-N-Pepa, Doc Martens and The X Files, runs through her life.
The conflict hangs over her hometown, but Erin's own problems feel more pressing. She is desperately in love with a boy who has no idea she exists. Her Ma and Aunt Sarah insist she bring her odd cousin Orla everywhere. Her headmistress, Sister Michael, refuses to accept that Erin is a literary genius. Meanwhile, her second-best friend has nearly had sex, and Erin has never even kissed anyone.
This is the first official tie-in to the series, published this autumn. It is written as an in-world publication that carries the show's humour onto the page. Through Erin's own perspective, it looks back at the events viewers have already seen, digs deeper into those stories, and reveals new storylines and previously unseen details about the characters. The pages include newspaper clippings, doodles, poetry, school reports, handwritten notes from her friends and much more.
The show has run for two series, launched as Channel 4's biggest UK comedy since 2004, and became the biggest television series in Northern Ireland since modern records began. The book is aimed at fans of the series and is pitched as a Christmas gift.
