Error, Ambiguity, and Creativity
About This Book
Eleven chapters, drawn from the arts, humanities, psychology and medicine, each look at error and ambiguity from inside a particular discipline. Each chapter first sets out what those terms mean in its field, then examines what they are worth and how they can be applied. The subjects include choreography, poetry, media art, healthcare, psychology, critical typography and mixed reality performance, so the same two ideas appear through very different professional lenses. The collection grows out of one central question: how can dance research and human-computer interaction (HCI) inform each other when error, ambiguity and untidiness are treated as methodological tools? Messiness is approached here as a working method in its own right rather than a flaw to be removed. The digital age once suggested that computer logic could eliminate error altogether. Several chapters push back on that idea by studying glitch in arts practice, where artists exploit faults in computer programs, and by considering cases where artists build programs specifically to produce errors. Across the chapters, the authors show how error can take thinking somewhere different or somewhere new, and how it can support a more interesting way of working.
