Ethics and Artificial Intelligence
About This Book
Rather than handing out settled answers, this book is built around questions, some of which have no certain answer, in order to push readers toward new and possibly futuristic scenarios. It starts from the two opposed camps in today's debate over artificial intelligence. Techno-pessimists see mostly dystopia and stress the dangers, while techno-optimists overstate the benefits, sometimes crediting technological progress with almost miraculous powers. Marino takes a secular and scientific middle path. Risks should be neither hidden nor exaggerated, and the positives should not be oversold. As with any social phenomenon, what creates advantages or disadvantages is the governance of the process and the rules and policies put in place, and above all these decide who enjoys the benefits and who carries the costs. Like any new technology, AI can be dehumanising, but technology is a tool whose effects depend on who uses it and how, which makes ethics a fundamental concern. The author's argument is that readers should be neither techno-optimists nor techno-pessimists. What matters is steering the economic and social upheavals that AI will bring, so that future generations can prosper and apocalyptic outcomes are avoided. Humanity has so far managed to govern technological progress, and it has the capacity to govern what some call the 'Final Invention', but only if it understands what is distinctive about this new kind of development and gives it an ethical dimension. The book reviews the relationship between artificial intelligence and ethics from philosophical, technological, economic and legal perspectives, and treats it as one of the most important issues humanity will have to face and resolve.
