About This Book
Written mostly in conversational verse, this collection speaks directly to the reader in plain, exact language that gives emotion a firm shape and lets the imagery stand out. The poem asks whether reaching a goal truly means arriving, and what that arrival costs. It weighs simple survival against the possibility of remaining stuck in the same place. Its everyday scenes include shelling peas, hurrying to the shop, and catching one's breath on a bench, alongside memories of a younger self before marriage and the strain of its battles. It also considers the duties and care owed to a husband, to society and to a child, and the wish, at times, to be willing to reconsider and to rewild oneself. The closing lines return to the question of arrival, urging the reader to rethink it and to start again from scratch. They look back to a turning point marked by a first drink and a hatch coming down.
