Exit Opera
About This Book
Exit Opera is a new collection from poet Kim Addonizio, whose work is known for its streetwise, unflinching treatment of love, lust and mortality. The poems range across settings as different as dive bars, Montparnasse Cemetery, an ancient Greek temple and a tourist shop in Assisi. Throughout, the collection returns to time, mortality, love and loss, and it considers what art and human connection can offer. The subjects of individual poems vary widely and include jazz, zombies, Buddhism and Siberian tigers. Whatever the topic, the poems combine humor with pain and difficulty with solace. Keats is one of the many fellow travelers in these pages, and Addonizio nods to him by inviting readers to write a few verses on whatever water they can find. She assures them they are not alone in facing the challenges and changes of a mortal life. The title poem, 'My Opera', pictures a difficult staging with exploding stars, distant galaxies, a little country blues and jazz guitar, and a jar holding a tiny ocean and an even tinier rowboat that the speaker steers toward the reader in the dark.
