Exodus
About This Book
Exodus is written as one long poem, though on the page it looks like an ordinary commentary on the biblical book of Exodus. Its parts are arranged in a chiastic pattern, so they mirror each other around a central point. That point is the word "violate," which ends chapter 30 and sits exactly three quarters of the way through the book. Each entry of commentary grows more intense as the text moves toward that moment, then eases off across the remaining chapters through chapter 40, forming what the author calls a perfect cross. The author set out to explain Scripture using nothing but Scripture. The chiastic design was not planned in advance; it emerged by chance during the writing. Two companion volumes are nearly finished: Genesis God Cares and Leviticus God Understands. The series varies how much commentary accompanies each passage. Genesis offers one line per section of Scripture, Exodus two, and Leviticus three, and the author intends three lines for the rest of the Bible. Taken together, the books take the shape of a sword that starts out pointed and widens to a set width. The author also regards this shape as unplanned, and holds that the books are divinely inspired, in keeping with the image of the Word as the Sword of the Spirit.
