Extinction (Large Print)

In a remote mountain valley, a ranger named Ben keeps watch over the only grizzly bear still alive. Much of the natural world has been worn down to almost nothing, and he has committed himself to guarding this one remaining piece of wilderness.

One night, voices drift into the valley. Poachers have come to hunt the bear, and Ben is pulled into a relentless pursuit across forests and mountain slopes, past the remains of human settlements from centuries earlier. He is alternately the hunter and the hunted, and he must decide what happens to the bear and to himself. The novel asks how far a person should go to protect a species on the edge of disappearing, and whether defending it could mean taking a life. It also considers what humanity owes the creatures it shares the planet with, especially when repair is no longer possible.
