About this book
Set in northeastern Minnesota, this novel continues the story begun in Silenced to Death. It focuses on people whom life has damaged, overlooked or cast aside, and on how they find the nerve to work their way, imperfectly, toward a better existence.
A young woman was robbed of her memories in a cruel way, and she responded by moving through each day on autopilot, pretending to be fine until she more or less was. Years later, painful and forceful recollections come back and fill the hollow, shadowy spaces in her mind. Having lived without the truth, she must now ask whether she can live with it.
Cameron is a driven writer who has found bestseller success but has been sinking under a lifestyle built on possessions and status, to the point that his death notice nearly got written. The book suggests that being a decent person means facing a painful past and its missteps, and admitting the fears, deceptions and bitterness that come with them.
