False Hearts

Taema and Tila were born joined at the heart, and for the first part of their lives they knew nothing but Mana's Hearth, an insular cult whose compound kept its members away from modern technology. Dreams of the world outside the walls were the only escape they had. As their shared heart started to give out, the sisters ran to San Francisco, where doctors separated them and fitted each with an artificial heart. They then built separate lives far removed from the compound.

A decade later, Tila appears at the apartment they once shared, frightened and stained with blood. Before she can explain anything, police arrive and charge her with murder, the first killing by a civilian in decades. Investigators believe she has ties to the Ratel, a crime syndicate that moves Zeal, a drug that lets violent people act out their darkest impulses inside a nightmarish dreamscape. Taema is offered a deal: pose as her sister and perhaps save her life.

As Taema works undercover, she uncovers troubling connections between the sisters' childhood and the present. The twins were once unable to keep anything from one another, but now they must face what their secrets have cost them.
