Familiaris
About This Book
Familiaris goes back to the beginning of the Sawtelle family and the line of dogs that carry its name. It is a companion to The Story of Edgar Sawtelle and explains where that family and its animals came from. The story opens in spring 1919. John Sawtelle has again let his imagination land him in trouble. He and his new wife, Mary, travel to the north woods of Wisconsin with their two closest friends and three dogs, hoping to start over and find out what a life of meaning, purpose and adventure takes. The place they have chosen turns out to be stranger and more dangerous than they expected. To make their dreams real, they will need all their resourcefulness and some new allies who are human, animal and otherworldly. The tone swings between comedy and heartbreak, and between the mysterious and the enchanted. The narrative moves from the floor of a small-town automobile factory, through a vast midwestern firestorm and a wartime dog training program of the Second World War, and then far back into humanity's ancient past. Along the way it looks at love and friendship, the trials of family life, the urge to make something lasting and beautiful, and the long partnership between Homo sapiens and Canis familiaris.
