Feeling Happy
About This Book
Feeling Happy treats happiness as a basic human capacity and avoids yoga jargon in doing so. The book asks what a fully embodied experience of happiness is and whether it can last. It also looks at how suffering, imbalanced emotion, and confusion can veil our ability to feel happy. The authors, Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor, draw on years of practising and teaching yoga and meditation, as well as on the philosophical meeting point of yoga and Buddhism. They use examples from everyday life, traditional ideas about the search for happiness, stories, and humor to guide readers back to the essence of who they are and to the direct experience of being happy. The book includes 24 accessible practices made up of meditations, simple movements, and breathing exercises, along with 22 black-and-white photos as guides. Together with the discussion of the nature of being, they aim to help readers integrate body, heart, and mind through the breath, so that compassion, equanimity, and happiness can arise even in hard times. The practices cover focusing and calming the mind, using the breath as a guide, working with difficulty and vulnerability, keeping a tender and open heart, building authenticity and presence, attuning to yourself and others, and cultivating kindness and compassion in complex times.
