Fevered Star

Fevered Star is the second novel in Rebecca Roanhorse's Between Earth and Sky trilogy, following Black Sun. The series is an epic fantasy inspired by the pre-Columbian Americas.

The great city of Tova lies shattered. The Crow God's eclipse holds the sun in a smothering grip, and a comet is about to appear that marks a ruler's death and the rise of a new order. The story is set in the Meridian, a land where magic has been codified and the worship of gods suppressed. When legends come to life and long-held faith is answered, how are people to live?

The sea captain Xiala is caught up in the chaos and shifting currents of change, and finds an unexpected ally in the former Priest of Knives. Among the Clan Matriarchs of Tova, tense alliances form as enemies from far away gather, and the war in the heavens is mirrored on earth.

Serapio and Naranpa are now both living avatars, and each fights for free will and personhood against destiny. Serapio is steeped in prophecy and surrounded by people who want only his power, so the question is how he can stay human. Naranpa must find out whether a transformed Tova has any place for her that does not mean her complete destruction.
