This study challenges several long-standing assumptions in the scholarship on intellectual disability in medieval Europe. Its author questions the popular stereotypes that have shaped how historians describe the period's understanding of cognitive impairment. Particular attention goes to the figures labelled 'fools', court jesters and 'idiots', and the book offers fresh ways of reading how these people were perceived and categorised.
