Fool's Journey

Harold, the narrator, has always treated the rule against killing as obvious, but he starts to wonder whether a good enough reason could change that. His family lives under a curse. When his aunt decided to end his mother's life support, the curse of the Frost Giants took hold and began freezing her from the inside. Harold can save her by stepping through a portal, but one misstep flings him into Tarotland, a realm where the tarot cards have come to life.

Harold still carries his runes, which is some comfort, but magicians are outlawed in this land and his own powers have not yet emerged. The portal will not reopen. His hope rests with a striking local woman who pushes him to play the part of the Fool and who has told him of a blade said to cut through any doorway. That power, however, demands a price.

A hidden predator is hunting him, and his name appears on wanted posters everywhere. Harold must find out whether he can reach his goal before his aunt takes her last breath.
