About this book
In 1940, Suzanne David is a schoolgirl in Cherbourg, a French port city where the war has seemed distant. That changes when a bomb falls on the central square and kills a pregnant neighbor in front of her. Soon German troops move into her family's home, and the Davids are forced out to fend for themselves.
Suzanne holds on to her passion for singing, and her gift is strong enough that she is preparing for a career as an opera singer. Her trips for rehearsals, costume fittings and lessons take her across the region, where she hears more about the Nazis and about the people who vanish without explanation. Her movements do not go unnoticed. A member of the French Resistance takes an interest in her, and before long she is working as a secret courier, carrying messages at great personal risk for the cause of freedom.
The book is based on the real life of Suzanne David and is written for young readers.
