Foreign Devils and Philosophers

This study traces the early encounters between Europeans and Chinese, when the two sides first began to engage closely with each other. Its evidence comes from scarce documents written in Chinese and in European languages, with particular weight given to Dutch material. Throughout, the author shows how each side was drawn to the other while also regarding it with suspicion and hostility.
