Foxcatcher
About This Book
In January 1996, Olympic gold medal wrestler Dave Schultz was shot dead at Foxcatcher Farms, the Pennsylvania estate of John E. du Pont, a member of one of America's wealthiest families. The man who fired the shot had presented himself for years as a devoted patron of amateur wrestling. Foxcatcher is the account of how that patronage ended in a killing, told by Dave's younger brother, Mark Schultz, who was also an Olympic champion in the sport. Mark lays out the story from the inside. He and Dave were both drawn into du Pont's orbit, where money, ambition and the chance to train at a lavish facility came bound up with the whims of an eccentric and increasingly unpredictable benefactor. Mark describes what it was like to live and compete under that influence, and how the relationship between the brothers and their sponsor turned darker over time. This is a personal and often unsettling memoir as much as a true crime story. It tells of ambition, loyalty and the cost of depending on a powerful patron, and it gives Mark's own full version of events for the first time. The book was the basis for the film Foxcatcher, and it will appeal to viewers of that film as well as readers drawn to strange, real-life stories of wealth and violence.
