About this book
In 1949, Milne Lowell, a Canadian writer, arrives in London to take charge of a magazine devoted to cultural liberty. He works alongside Marguerite Allard, a French-Canadian anarchist, Eric Felmore, an American novelist, and Carson Ward, a British poet. At first the project seems to be a shared crusade for freedom, and the group is eager to champion it. Gradually, however, their confidence frays as disquieting events pile up and the sporadic violence of the Cold War moves closer.
The novel is an atmospheric study of passivity, loyalty, and the place of literature during political upheaval. Its characters are drawn into a widening unease, and the reader moves with them through city streets still marked by the war.
Set among the literary circles of postwar London, the book captures the texture of its era's writers and editors, with suspense and intrigue running beneath its surface.
