Fraternity
About This Book
A worn-down colonial house in a Massachusetts college town is home to the Delta Zeta Chi fraternity. Its living room smells of sweat and spilled beer, but for the men who live there, simply being allowed inside is what counts. Newton, the chapter president, is well liked. Petey, the treasurer, is devoted to his brothers almost to a fault. Oprah is the sensitive reader of the group. Claire, a college dropout who moves from one couch to the next, comes around hoping to sell the house drugs. There is also a young woman whom everyone calls God, though the reason for the nickname is unexpected. The novel follows young men and women who are still caught between adolescence and adulthood during their first years away from home. Drunken escapades, solemn confessions, and romantic encounters make up their days and nights, and the bonds they form are rough, loyal, and tangled. Beneath every episode runs a fear of being left out. Oprah, who has not come out, finds that his idolization of a hero has turned into genuine longing. A combat veteran in the house offers advice about hazing, and an alienated young woman looks for a place where she belongs. Throughout the book, the threat of sexual assault hangs over every sexual encounter.
