Gems
About This Book
The book takes its name from a Buddhist teaching that every living being holds a precious jewel. Each of these jewels rests where the strands of the vast web of the universe cross one another. Buddhism is one of the four major world religions, and it is growing quickly in Canada.
What does Buddhism look like in Canada? The author looks at the more than 550 temples, meditation centres and retreats across the country and asks what happens inside them. Other questions drive the book: when Buddhists first arrived in Canada, where they came from, who practises today, and whether anyone can become a Buddhist. The text covers the meaning, practice, sociology, history and lived experience of Canadian Buddhism in an accessible, easygoing style.
Written from a Buddhist perspective, the book considers how these teachings bear on wellbeing and on the difficulties of growing up. Numerous photographs show daily life in Canadian Buddhist communities and important events in their history.
