About this book
Dennis James Sweeney follows an illness moving through a body, a haunting moving through a house, and a sensation moving through the words meant to contain it. The book asks how sickness spreads through a person, what to do with the parts of the self we sense but can't pin down, and where the ghosts in our lives are hiding and what they are called.
The pages mix diagrams of ghosts, commentary on the work of Clarice Lispector, photographs, interviews, and lyric prose. Its cover is an early Anna Atkins cyanotype that turns a picture of algae into a spectral figure, and the book works in the same way, taking the author's life with Crohn's disease and recasting it as something unseen, hard to measure, yet present everywhere.
